I thought this was really cute. But then I began to wonder, why chicks? What do they have to do with Easter? And how did that darn Bunny reap all the attention on what should be a sacred holiday?

I think this is an example of the early Christians cleverly adopting Pagan practices to make conversion more palatable. The Teutonic goddess of the spring is Eostre (I think I'm spelling that right), and the hare was her symbol -- a symbol of fertility ("**ing like bunnies"?). Same with the chicks and eggs, I imagine -- all symbols of fertility and rebirth and, hence, springtime!
